To defend the place the Kremlin was erected at the beginning ot the 16th century. Now it is one of the oldest cities in Russia and the 5-th largest in population (about 1.3 million people). It is situated 400 kilometers east of Moscow at the junction of the rivers Volga and Oka.
During Soviet times Nizhny was renamed Gorky for one of the Soviet famous writers Maxim Gorky, who was born here. The world-known physicist Andrei Sakharov was in exile here in the 80-ies. Then it was the centre of the munitions industry. The city was reopened for foreign visitors in 1991.
Now once again named Nizhny Novgorod, the city has become the capital of Privolzhsky region and a centre of democratic market reforms. The former military production is converted to peaceful needs.
